Today the twins had their 6 month well baby visit with their doctor. The girls are both doing great!! Eleanor is 15lbs!! That's a whole pound heavier than Lily at this age! She's just a hair over 25% in weight. She is 26 inches now too. That's just above 50%. Head circumference was 43cm. Violet is still a peanut at 12lbs 12oz. That keeps her at 5% on the growth chart for weight. For height she is 25 3/4 inches long. That's about 50%! And her head circumference is 40.5 cm, which is also in the 5th percentile. Their doctor is still a little concerned with Violet's weight, but says she's been gaining consistently at her own curve, so she just may be meant to be small. She did jump a percentile in height though! We thought she was looking taller lately!
Their shots went well. Of course there was the usually crying during and after, but they are ok now! As all mothers know it's so hard to watch our little guys get poked, and it's doubly harder to watch 2 of your kids get them one right after the other! Their next appointment will be horrible, because Lily will also be getting a shot then! (though I'm trying to remember...are there shots at 8-9 months? I remember getting a break at one of the first year appointments with Lily...maybe it was that one?)
We got the green light to start meats, and other fun food with the girls! The doctor was even telling us about new research about allergies, and how they are now recommending it better to give those common allergy foods during the first year because at this age their bodies don't recognize it as something they need to fight against. She recommended we start putting a dab of peanut butter next to their lips for a week, and if there was no reaction we could start giving it to them. Now I'm not going to jump right in and start doing this on her recomendation alone...and would never give peanut butter at this age anyways because of choking risks, but this is some interesting new information! I'll definitely be researching this some more! She also laughingly sugested with give Violet ice cream to help her gain more weight. (she was serious about the suggestion...but was laughing I think because it's kind of a silly recommendation!) I won't be giving Violet ice cream this early though! We'll let her get closer to one! haha! I think I will be getting her some avocados to try soon though...lots of good fats in those!

First Carrots
On April 26th, the girls had their first taste of carrots! I boiled up some baby carrots for them and pureed them, then mixed them with some oatmeal. You can tell from Ella's first reaction what she thought of them!

Not a fan!

She did end up eating them pretty well though!
Violet of course, so far the adventurous eater, enjoyed them right away! This girl loves to each her solid foods! I woulcn't say she likes carrots as much as she likes bananas or apples, but she didn't turn them down!

It's so much fun trying all these new foods with the girls!!

Renaissance Faire
On May 22nd we took a trip down to the Ct renaissance faire! This was my first time to a faire like this, so I had no idea what to expect. I guess I had visions of everyone being in costumes, and our family sticking out like a sore thumb because we were in our modern day clothes! I was so relieved when we got there and I saw that there were plenty of people not dressed up! (I know it's silly that I was worried about this...but I really was!! haha!) There were a lot of people dressed up still though, which made people watching really fun!
Once inside the faire we walked around a bit, stopping to grab water to make the twins bottles, and to try to see the jousting tournament (with the area so thick with people that only Lily could see anything sitting on our shoulders!). We stopped to watch a cute play that used kids from the audience to act out the parts (princesses and knights). We tried to convince Lily to be a princess, but she was too shy! After the play was over she finally declared that she wanted to be a princess in the play, so we promised her we'd come back for the next show.
After the play Lily stumbled upon one of her favorite parts of the faire. There were these hammock swings that you could test out. Lily fall in love with them, and kept wanting to come back!

After letting her hang out a bit we went on a search for some food for lunch. We quickly found hot dogs for Sean and Lily, but I had trouble finding something since I only eat chicken and turkey (and the idea of eating a turkey leg kinda grosses me out!). It was really crowded where all the food was, and I spied a tent with Thai food at the end of the row of food tents. Not what I would imagine at a renaissance faire, but it'll do! Sean got in line for the hot dogs for himself and Lily, while I took all three girls into the dining tent to watch a Celtic band, The Rogues. Lily LOVED watching them! She's developed a love for drums, and was just giddy to see them playing the bodhran.
Watching the show:
Sean brought Lily her hot dog while we were listening to the music, and then went out to see what was at the thai tent. After a long while he still wasn't back, and the drums were getting pretty loud for the girls, so we left to go look for him. We found him on his way back to the tent with a plate of pad thai for me. He was in line the whole time. I feel horrible that he missed the music getting me lunch! If I had known the line was so long, I would have found something else! The icing on the cake...the pad thai was pretty disgusting! Oh well, that's what I get for ordering Thai food at a renaissance faire! I just feel so bad Sean waited all that time in line for it! Sorry again honey!
While I ate, Sean took Lily over to an area that had lots of games like hula hoops, devil sticks, stilts, and joggling balls. Lily loved this area too, and we kept coming back to it! She had fun with the hula hoops this time:

After playing with the hoops, it was time for the kids play to start another show, so we headed over there again...talking it up with Lily that she could be a princess. She was all excited about it, until she saw the hammock swings again, and wanted to try them out again. After a quick swing, we got her to keep moving onto the play. Once we got there though and tried to encourage her to join in with the other girls dressing up as princesses, she got shy again! She just wanted to go back to the swings. What the lady wants, the lady gets! (In this instance at least!)

I really wish we had a big tree to hang one of these in our yard! I would have loved to bring one of these home with us! They looked so comfy!
Next we headed over to the pony ride area. While waiting for our turn to put Lily on a horse, Lily fell in love with a little brown pony. She kept saying "Look at the chocolate pony!" I was worried that we were on the verge of a melt down when they put a white and light brown pony named Archie on for Lily, but she was happy as a clam to ride any pony! I was relieved when the handler walked next to Lily the whole time, making sure she stayed on. Lily had a blast talking to the lady about Archie! She loved her pony ride!
First time on a pony:

Quick hugs with Daddy after her pony ride:

Right next to the horses was a small petting zoo with sheep and goats. This was right up Lily's alley! She had so much fun feeding the animals! I think the pictures tell much more than my words can:

I think she would have stayed with these goats the rest of the day if we let her! But we moved her along, and we made stop #2 at the games area. This time Lily tried out the stilts, with my help. I held the rope tight for her, and walked right behind her, helping her keep the stilt to her feet. Here she is trying it out by herself:

She also gave the joggling pins and balls a try...but not as they were intended to be used! She made up her own way to play with them...golf! She used the ball as the ball (naturally), and the pin as her club.
We then went to watch the may pole dance. The girls were getting antsy to eat again, and to get out of the stroller, so we made a spot for ourselves on the grass and watched the gypsies guide guests with the may pole dance.
Proof that the twins were with us:

Ella was more interested in her toes than her bottle. She was just so happy to be out of the stroller for a while!

Lily, Violet and Daddy watching the gypsies belly dancing:

While watching, Lily spied a lollipop on the wagon next to us. She kept sneaking over to it. Took us a while to figure out why she was so interested in the wagon! Nothing gets by Lily though!
Pointing out the lollipop to us:

Lily really enjoyed watching the dancers though! She got up with them on their last song (they invited people to come learn some of the moves with them). This one lady was so sweet and danced with Lily:
After they finished dancing, this lady let Lily try out her finger symbols, and was trying to teach her how to play them! Her daughter, who's also in the gypsy troupe, sat and played with Lily too! The two of them were so nice to give Lily this special attention! I think this was my favorite moment of the day!

Lily's hand was too small to play the symbols on one hand though, and was really struggling with it. All on her own she figured out her own way to play them!

I wish I had gotten these ladies names, because they were so sweet with Lily, and really made a memorable experience for all of us!
After playing with the gypsies, we wondered around a bit more. Sean really wanted to try out archery again, since he use to practice as a child. I think he really had fun with that!

He did really well I think! He hit the bullseye twice, and the others were all very close! Guess he hasn't lost it!
We just wondered after that, a couple more stops at the games area, and hammock swings, and made our way back to the car. We had a really get time at the faire! I'm so glad we finally decided to give this a try! We will definitely be back for the fall festival!

Super Lily
Just wanted to share a very quick conversation I just had with Lily.
Me: "Lily, are you a super hero, or a super villain?"
Lily: "Super Villain!"
Me: "Are you here to save the Earth or destroy it?"
Lily: "Destroy it!!"
Oh jeez!! She certainly is a wild child sometimes! Haha!

5 Months
Sorry this is a little late!
Dear Eleanor and Violet,
Again, I'm amazed at how fast each month goes!! This was another big month in development and learning new things!!
You both are getting SO strong! Ella, you FINALLY rolled over on April 23! You don't seem all that interested in rolling though, because you've only done it 2 more times since then! You're just happy to be on your belly I guess! I know you're not behind developmentally, even though you are not rolling much, because you've also started sitting up unassisted this month!! It takes a little propping, but you can sit for several minutes without support! You did that for the first time on April 29th. Violet, you have finally started to enjoy standing up just as much as your sister! You love standing now! You also continue to try to hard to pull yourself up to a sitting position, and roll when you feel like it.
You both seem to be in love with your feet this month! You both have really discovered them! You love grabbing your feet, and trying to get them to your mouths. Violet, you finally got yours to your mouth a couple days after your 5th month b-day, and then Ella, you got yours to your mouth a couple days later! You also both continue to kick like crazy! I think it's time to install Lily's old kick mat toy to your crib!
Probably the biggest thing from this month has been starting solids! I've already written about your first time eating, since then you have continues to not seem to thrilled about solids! Every meal time was a struggle to get you both to eat a couple spoon fulls. Violet, I was worried about starting you on solids, since you didn't seem ready, but you actually seem to be doing better at swallowing your food than Ella! It was just a few days ago that you both started to actually get the concept of eating solids, and have started to eat more of your oatmeal! I'm excited to start introducing fruits and veggies this month!
Your different personalities are really starting to show lately! Violet, you are always so happy and easy going! You're quite the flirt, and love to smile at people! And people can't help but smile when they see your huge grin! You are such a morning person too. One of my favorite parts of every day is waking up to your beautiful smile! Ella, you are a lot more curious and reserved. You always seem like you're trying to figure things out! We've also seen a really playful side to your personality this month! You love to play in your jumperoo, and shriek with delight when you're in it! You're laugh is just infectious! You are definitely NOT a morning person! Every morning while waking up, you fuss and fight so much to keep sleeping! I'm already worrying about having to get you up in time for school when you are a teenager!
You both have really discovered your voices this month, especially Violet! A few weeks ago you started shrieking super high pitched all the time, especially when we were playing! It's was so funny to see, even though it hurt our ears a little! It reminded us of a pterodactyl! Then you forgot all about that vocalization for a while Violet, and started doing this gaspy, sucking in air noise all the time! (Talk about freaking me out...it almost sounds like you are choking...but it's just you experimenting with your voice!) Now you remembered the shrieking sound, and are doing both that and the gaspy sound all the time! Ella, recently you picked up on the gaspy sound too! Mostly your vocalizations are full of grunts and exasperated sighs! I also swear I've heard you babble mum when you are upset!
Both of you girls are seriously teething right now!! You both have massive amounts of drool, and are chewing on everything you can get to your mouths! Sophie the giraffe and my teething necklace have become your favorite toys because they are good to chew on! You each have had a few really extremely fussy days, where the only thing we can figure is that you were in a lot of pain from your teeth coming up. You both also have puffy gums, and we're starting to be able to feel the first 2 teeth under the surface. We expect we'll be seeing both of you get your first teeth within the next month or so!
I'm so excited to see what this next month will bring for you both! You are both so amazing in every way! I love that you are both so wonderfully different We are so proud of how much you are learning and growing!! We love you girls so much!!!
Love always,
Mommy

First Apple Sauce
On May 19th I gave the girls their first real food (after cereal!) Apple sauce!! I still had a container of the apple sauce we had made back in the fall in my freezer, and thought it would be a wonderful introduction to fruits for the girls! We also had just gotten cute new bibs from Uncle Bob and Aunt Michele that I wanted to try out, so I took a few picture pre-apple sauce.
Violet:

Ella:
While snapping a few more pictures of Violet, Lily decided she was going to feed Ella from her own bowl of apple sauce! I caught her just as Ella was taking her first bite! Of course what do I do? Snap a picture of course!

Ella clearly didn't like it very much!

Another bite:

Starting to like it more:

Then Lily gave Violet her first bite:

She liked it a little more than Ella, but still spat out the first few bites:

More of Ella eating:

In the end it would seem Violet really started to enjoy her apple sauce! Ella still needs time to learn to love it!
